On Reading Outside Your Comfort Zone

Right now, I am reading a book clearly outside of my comfort zone. It neatly falls into the romance genre, which I avoid like the plague.

Fairytales, even as a child, have never been my "thing". Getting lost in someone's eyes and mesmerized by the tone of their voice...yuck!!  But, the author has pulled me along, like a tantrum-throwing toddler. I have been kicking the covers and tossing pillows as I read. Why? Because this book is making me see something I never wanted to see.

Authors are told to write about what they fear and makes them uncomfortable. Well, I say to my readers something similar. Read what you fear. Read what makes you literally split open. Then, and only then, can reading change you.
