How Long Does It Take To Read a Book (Book Blogger Hop)

How long does it usually take you to finish a book?

Short and Sweet Answer
Depends on several factors.

Long Answer
The length of time it takes to read a book depends on several factors, including the obvious ones - interest and length.

Other factors:
1.Format: Takes me longer to read physical copies, since I can only read in 'safe' places (safe = not driving, not in water, not walking, etc)

2. Editing: Takes me longer to trudge through an unfinished ARC with crazy formatting where words are cut off or have odd characters in between letters and sentences. With regard to a finished book, if words are misspelled or the use of a comma is foreign to the author, it can take days to read.
(Rant: I recently tried to read a book where the wine Rosé was spelled Rosay, Rozay, and several other ways. To make matters worse, diesel was spelled diesil and commas seemed to be against the law! I had to stop.)

3. Narrator: If the narrator is breathy or has very little expression, it can take days to weeks to get through it. For example, one narrator, Xe Sands, I cannot listen too if she is not part of a cast.

4. Interest: If I love the author (see the side bar for some of my favorites), the world stops and I can read the book in a day regardless of length.

5. Length: Naturally, the longer the book, the more words I must read. But, I have found this is not always the case. Think filler! Some books have so much additional information that is not part of the story - acknowledgements, about the author, listing of their other works, discussion questions, teaser chapters, etc. (NOTE: Yes, I read all of it because it gives me insight. But, it doesn't count as the 'story'.)

6. LIFE: Whatever is going in my life often dictates the number of hours I can devote to reading.

With all of these factors, my average times are as follows.

Digital or Physical Book
- 2-3 days for a book 300-500 pages and
- 5-7 days for a book over 700 pages

Audiobooks
- 1-2 days for a book between 3-11 hours
- 3-4 days for a book over 11 hours.
